Sports in Barnala
Just as in rest of Punjab, people of Barnala are very much fond of sports. Different categories of games are played not only in its numerous schools and colleges, but also in different independent clubs such as Barnala Sports and Social Welfare Club, Baba Kala Mahir Sports Club etc. In fact, the one we know as Barnala Club opened as Sports Club way back in the pre-independence days.
Barnala Club - The First Sports Club in Barnala
Even at that time its inception, the objective of the Barnala Club was to promote and encourage sports among its members. Today, it provides facilities for different indoor and outdoor games. Apart from a swimming pool, the club has a badminton hall, lawn tennis court, basket ball court etc within its premise. Moreover, in March 2013, a newly built sports complex was inaugurated by Rajya Sabha member Sukhdev singh Dhindsa. Extension Center built by Sports Authority of India
Today of course Barnala Club is just one of the many sporting institutions that dot different parts of the town. Taking into account the town’s interest in sports, the Sports Authorities of India has opened an Extension Center at Barnala. In addition to boxing and kabaddi, the center also provides training for basket ball playing. It is hoped that, more and more categories will be introduced in near future.District Football Association of Barnala
Among the different sports associations that have been formed to promote sports in Barnala, the role of District Football Association is highly commendable. It is a branch of Football Association of Punjab and works consistently to promote the game among all levels of the citizens. In March 2014, a team comprising of hearing and speech impaired players won the 6th Punjab Deaf and Dumb Football Tournament organized by the Football Association of Punjab. District Cricket Association too is quite active in its field. They regularly hold inter-district cricket matches for school children. This not only helps them to promote the game, but also to spot budding talents and nurture them from the very beginning. Since they are a branch of the Punjab Cricket Association, they have ample of fund.
